Orange Dark Terror (with matching cab) or Fender Hot Rod (Deluxe or Deville)?

I am buying my first tube amp to go with the 1984 Gibson Les Paul Standard Ebony i just bought. I want to play all styles of music, and I mean all. I have tried the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 3 at guitar center and really like it. I have heard the orange dark terror on youtube and stuff and it sounds killer! Please tell me if I should buy the dark terror, and what cab, or the fender hot rod and which model. I am completely open to other suggestions, but the final price(cab and all) has to be under 1200. I have a spider jam right now and I absolutely hate how it sounds.

The Spider Jam is a great practice and simple recording tool, but you're right, they don't sound all that good. I have owned all 3 of the amps you're looking at and my suggestion is to buy none of them. The Terror series, Dark Terror, Tiny Terror and Dual Terror are very much one trick ponies. They are not even close to being a versatile amp.

I just sold my Hot Rod DeVille and had a Hot Rod Deluxe about 3 years ago. Worst gain channel ever. I only had them because I got them on a trade with the intention of selling. They sound fine clean but the drive channels are total crap. But if you like them that's all that matters. Personally I don't see any Fender amp as being very versatile. Doesn't matter what pedal you put in front of them, it still sounds like a Fender amp with a distortion pedal.

If you are hell bent on a Fender, the Deluxe Reverb is a far superior amp to anything in the Hot Rod series. If I were you I'd check out the Egnator Renegade, Line 6 DT 25 (extremely versatile)
and the Blackstar HT-60. The Fender Super Sonic may be worth a look also.

TUBE AMPLIFIER HEADS ?

What tube amplifier heads do you recomend for starters. Im buying one next summer when im old enough to get a job. My budget is under 1000 dollars. I dont want something too big or too small. Something like a 50 watt would be perfect for me. I want an orange amp bad but their so damn expensive. Right now im playing on a fender frontman which i love but its not strong enough for small gigs. I can practically play all of the red hot chili peppers hits and im at a decent level of playing. Im a huge fan of frusciantes work but i dont wanna be a tone chaser and get a marshall stack just cus he uses them.

I also hate solid state amps

and im buying/building the cab when i get the head
this amps a 15 watt but i just fell in love with the tone. Would an orange tiny terror or a dual terror(30 watt) be good for a small gig.

If you are being mic'd, you don't need something that's very loud. If you aren't being mic'd, then yeah, you need something that will push some air.

I do own an Epiphone Valve Jr. It is a 5w all-tube amp. Yes, if it is plugged into a decent 4×12 or 2×12 cab it can put out quite a bit of volume, but there is a point where it starts to saturate and once you get past 1 o'clock or so on the volume knob you won't be able to get any clean tones out of it. Not a bad amp, and if my buddy is playing his 100w Marshall MG head through his 4×12 and doesn't turn up *too* loud, it can hold its own! But for live, non-mic'd performances… Nah, I'd want more wattage. Yes, it is a great amp for modifying, etc, and if you did the octal mod to it, so that it could use a 6L6 or EL34 instead of the EL86 (EL84? Whatever), it will be a lot louder, but that's a mod that even I am not ready to do, and I'm not willing to spend the money for it either. The biggest criticism I have of the amp is that its loudness is based so much on its treble and upper mid response – once you try to get some decent low end out of it it runs out of headroom very fast and you just can't get as much volume out of it.

Crate has the V series, and I've been very interested in the V33, either the 2×12 combo or head. Decent price, 33 watts, which is more than enough to be loud enough for what I need. For the price I could then spend some time upgrading the speakers (for the combo), tubes, components, whatever. 33 tube watts is plenty loud, as I'm sure you're aware, but should be enough to sound good at low volumes as well, so it should work just fine with or without a mic.

So much depends on your cab… More speakers = pushing more air, and this is crucial in terms of your volume. There's a reason why 4×12's are so popular – not only the low-end resonance from the bigger speaker box, but more speakers = more sound dispersal, and that means that more people can hear you!

I would actually encourage you to try the Marshall MG series. I know you've said you don't like solid state, but honestly, I'm a bit of a tube snob myself, and I've been very impressed with the MG ***when coupled with a decent cab!***

So I actually would encourage you to couple the 100w MG head with a decent 2×12, or even try the 50w 1×12 combo. It's still quite loud, and has a decent size box, so it actually has quite a solid low end chunk – I went with my buddy to Guitar Center at what point and compared the two side by side, the Marshall MG with stock half-stack, and the 1×12 50w combo A/B next to each other. It was kinda funny, the 50w had more low end chunk….

I suggest looking up Avatar speakers… Higher quality than the brand name stuff, ie the Marshall 2×12, and you get to pick your speakers. I love the Celestion G12T-75's, I think they're one of the best speakers out there for anything even vaguely rock-ish. Plenty of wattage, so they don't break up easily (you keep your low end, even at high volumes!) and enough high end to cut through but not enough to get all hissy or whatnot.

Personally, I'm running a Crate Powerblock at the moment. It's a solid state power amp, true, but I'm coupling it with a Tubeworks tube preamp, and that really gives it a good tube feel. I've got a Tubeworks power amp (solid state power amp with built-in tube preamps) on layaway, though, and the Powerblock may end up as my backup. =)

Don't be too quick to knock solid-state, I guess is what I'm saying – many great players have used solid-state amps, and they sounded great (BB King and Dimebag Darrell are two who come to mind!).

Anyhoo…. Good luck. It *is* important to play before you buy, or at least make sure the store has a good return policy! =)

Saul.

Is an Orange PiX CR35LDX 35W 1×10 combo amplifier loud enough to play with a drummer?

I'm planning on trading in my Vox VT15 Combo in at Guitar Center for an Orange PiX CR35LDX 35W. Will this be loud enough to play with a drummer and bassist? The drummer I play with is a very hard hitter, and I really don't know what would be loud enough.

Posted by Nanerpuss

It's probably fine. If it seems too quiet, then turn down the "low" knob and turn up the "mid" knob. That will help cut through the noise of the drums.

Orange crush CR20L or CR20LDX?

I'm about to get my first electric guitar and i am thinking of getting either a epiphone SG or a jackson dinky guitar and i know these are pretty cheap which will be good to get as a good first guitar, the amp i was going to spend i bit more on as this way i will get the best sound possible out of these beginner guitars and then eventually as i progress i may move on to a better guitar which i can again get a good sound out of them with the good amp.

I was thinking about getting an orange crush amp and the two i have found are…

– Orange Crush PiX CR20L Combo Amp: £89
-Orange Crush PiX CR20LDX Combo With Digital Effects: £127

the CR20LDX has digital effects and a built in tuner which mainly attracted me to it, is this really worth the extra £40?

Or would you not recommend this amp at all? This is just for home use so i think 20 watts would be perfect however i have no experience so i really wouldn't know, just guessing.

Is there any other amps (preferably around this price range or cheaper) that you would recommend?

And also if it doesn't have a tuner in what tuner would you recommend? Or would a pedal have a built in tuner?

If i was to save some money on the amp i may be able to get a better guitar, if i can what guitar would you recommend?

Questions and Answers

The gain on my 20 watt orange guitar amp has shorted out. How do i fix?

I own an Orange Crush PiX CR20LDX Guitar Combo Amplifier which was recently transported in the back of a trailer with no cushioning. As a result, something has shorted on the gain / distortion channel. When switched from the clean to gain, it still sounds like the clean, but with a weak fuzz underneath, even when at max volume. Before it sounded full, as it should. Will i need a type of fuse to repair? Curious what a basic fix would be, as i'd like to attempt on my own before taking to a repair shop, to learn the working of the amp if nothing else. Otherwise i will take to repair. Thank you for your help!

Posted by Leon: The Professional
[display_name id=”1″]

If you had a problem with a fuse, the amp would be dead…no output what so ever.

There's a lot of things that could be wrong with the amp…and it's just not possible to guess what the problem is without having it on a bench and doing some rudimentary tests.

It's not a tube amp, so changing those isn't an option.

Unless you know what you're doing and have the proper equipment to diagnose and repair the amp, you're going to do more harm than good trying to work on it yourself. I've had a lot of amps come through me that if the owners had left them alone it would have been a $50 repair. Since they jacked with the amp, it turned into a $150+ repair.

Of course, your amp is not that expensive (about $160 new street price), so you have to weigh whether it's worth repairing or not.

Good luck.

Any suggestions on a decent budget Amp for bedroom blues/rock guitar practising?

I am only looking to spend £50-70 on an amp, a mate suggested an Orange Crush 10, he said it had a nice vintage sound and I do want something that sounds quite vintage, any other suggestions tho?

Thanks in advance!!!

I suggest the little Line 6 spider IV practice amp. It has 4 channels, and I believe the crunch channel is right up your alley. It also has effects as well. Very good practice amp for the money. I paid around 100 US dollars new. Believe me, I'm a tube amp fanatic, but for practice and jamming at home, you cant go wrong with it. Good luck.

Guitar Amps? Need Help?

I have just started to learn guitar, and have a squire telecaster. I need a small amp for home use and practice etc. I have seen two amps that i like but don't know which one to buy. I like the Marshall MS2 Micro amp and the Orange micro crush. But which one, or any other good practice amps around this price? Thanks.

Posted by Bob Bobby
[display_name id=”1″]

What the people answering your question don't seem to realize is that the amps you're looking at are the micro version. They are very, very small (6 inches tall sort of thing) and very low wattage (1-3). They are tiny little things and are only meant for personal practice. That said, they do sound cool for how small they are and can get pretty loud. I would suggest either the Marshall MS4, the Vox Mini, or the Orange Micro Crush. If you want a bigger sound, go with the Orange, if you want lots of effects, go with the Vox, if you know what a Marshall sounds like and you like it, get that. These demos don't do them justice, but: Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYvOt3cfz… and Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYvOt3cfz… the playing is bad, but they are both great. I haven't tried both enough to say which I prefer, but you'd be good going with either one…

Any amp would work, but of those, I'd pick the Fender Frontman. You might want to look for a used one with a bigger speaker and at least 15 watts if you find one. You'll spend the same but have a better amp. Fender makes a nice 25 watt Frontman amp that costs about $99/US new, so maybe you could find a used one your price range. I also like the Raven amps from Guitar Center if you can get one of those where you live. I got a 20 watt Raven amp with 12" speaker for $69 and it's a great practice amp.

Questions and Answers

Which Bass amp would be better for pop punk, Ampeg BA115 or the Orange Crush PIX CR100BXT?

The both have the same watts (100) and the same size speaker (15"). I've saved up for the 2 basses that I wanted (Fender American Vintage '57 Precision Bass and the Fender Highway 1 Jazz Bass, both loaded with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounds) and they deserve to play through a better amp than the crappy one that I have now. I play pop punk, indie and alternative (Blink 182, Green Day, Simple Plan, Rise Against, Arctic Monkeys, RHCP, The Bouncing Souls etc.) Which of these 2 would you recommend for this type of music, or would you recommend a completely different amp? It doesn't have to be huge because I only play small gigs.

The Orange Crush for build quality, sound and tone.

Questions and Answers

What is the smallest size amp that you recommend for playing small gigs?

I have a 10watt amplifier and i am starting to perform. I literally had to put the volume up all the way, put the level setting on my distortion and overdrive pedals all the way up in the last two shows i played. Im planning on either getting an orange 15 watt amp or an orange 30 watt
but these get really expensive ( if you dont count the crush series )
to sum it all up i dont want a half stack i just want a small combo amp strong enough to fill a school auditorium and small enough to be carried around classes.

Sometimes its not so much the wattage as the speakers and cabinet,
15w will get the job done if the speaker will back it up, not familiar with Orange, but I've had one of these as a practice amp for the last 4 years without a glitch, and look at the price! Dude this thing has bounced around in the back of a van or 2 also. Maybe I just got a good one IDK

Questions and Answers

Orange Crush PiX CR35LDX 35W 1×10 or Marshall MG4 Series MG50FX 50W 1×12?

I'm wondering which one would be better to purchase. Both are around the same price, the Orange has different effects that seem pretty appealing. The Marshall has more wattage (and I've heard great things about Marshall amps). However, I'm not sure how good this Marshall is, I've heard different reviews. I like to play classic rock (Zeppelin, Purple, Aerosmith, Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Rush) so which would be more suitable to playing that type of music? Also which would be better to play in a small gig environment? As much insight and tips as possible, please. Thanks!

Well I've read reviews on them also. And I've seen where the that Orange amp, the speaker is not great. For the Marshall the effects don't work that great. I would go with the Marshall because I could go without effects.

Ok i mite get a guitar soon and i have a few questions 1:wht guitar (low price) 2: how do u play it and where do i get the guitar sheets for a song (plug in baby by muse) ?

Posted by synchro man
[display_name id=”1″]

All answers except Gene's are great answers. I have bought quite a few guitars and my favourite choice for a beginner metal head is a cruiser by crafter RG600. I got mine for £60 from ebay and its fantastic. Matt Bellamy(the guy from muse) mainly uses telecaster guitars so you could get one of them from someone like squier. Ibanez guitars are fantastic for shredding and anything metal really. You will also need to consider getting an amp if you are going for an electric guitar. Orange Micro crush amps are great for beginners as they are really cheap with a great sound and they have an onboard tuner.
For your second question, you should learn to read tab. Tab or Tablature is a much more common form of guitar music and it is easier to read than sheet music. Try Http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/
That site is great for tab music. Before you go straight into learning songs I would have to suggest to learn more basic techniques and stuff first as MUSE arent exactly the easiest songs to learn so you will need to know what you are doing first. Use Youtube for some beginner guitar lessons or my favourite website is: Http://www.aaronsguitarlessons.com/
This is the best site I can find for learning guitar and its free. Send me a message with your musical interests and I can give you some better recomendations. Also I have a youtube account which I post vids of me playing and testing guitar stuff. Im gonna be putting some instructional stuff on there soon.

Converting Voltage for American Guitar amp to Europe. HELP!?

I have an Orange Crush 30R guitar amp and I need to take it to play shows in Europe in 2 weeks and cannot get a straight answer on what I will need to convert the power. There is no switch on the back of the amp (that i can see) but it does make a reference on the back to 0.68@115 Vac and 0.34@ 230 Vac. It also says elsewhere 115 Vac (60 Hz)/ 250 V T2a. Does anyone know what this means? Or know what kind of converter I will need. I would obviously like to avoid buying a transformer box if I don't need one. Thanks 😉

Posted by bettyjones108

I would call Orange Crush first. From the writing on the back there is a possibility it has a "universal power supply." What this means is the amp will run on any voltage listed without any change. This is very particular to the amp and should not be assumed without checking. Short of that, Http://www.magellans.com/ and search the word transformer. They have the adapter you need, 100 watt.

Orange or Laney electric guitar amp?

I'm interested in buying a new amp (need to upgrade from my lame peavey…) and I'm debating between a Laney LG35R and an Orange Crush 30R. I'm leaning towards the Orange, but I'm still on the fence. Any suggestions?

Posted by St. 1
[display_name id=”1″]

It depends on what sound you want, or what type of music you're looking to play. Laney's typically tend to have a tighter (more compressed) overdrive crunch (almost distortion). Oranges (from the few that I have played) seem have a nice looser "old-british" overdrive in my opinion. I have always liked the more overdriven tube crunch as opposed to distortion. I like the way the Oranges sound, personally so I'd go with the Crush. I never cared too much for Laneys. But the key is to pick the one that works for you and what you want to play.

Good luck.

You need to put some full stops in here!

The low, mid and high are tone controls (bass, mid and treble), if you have higher low and middle, there will be a deeper overdraft in addition to the gain, which will produce its own distortion sounds. Alot of rock stars use orange, Marshal are very over-rated. Just play about with the knobs and see what you like the sound of, but don't forget it will also sound very different when played quietly compared to when really cranked up.

Good luck!

Yeah, there seems to be some confusion on the web about that amp having a tuner. It does not. The features of the amp are enumerated here:

Unfortunately, you are going to have to look elsewhere for your tuning needs. If you have a smartphone, I'd recommend downloading one of the guitar tuning apps. That's the cheapest way to get a good, versatile tuner. If you're looking for a stomp-box electric-guitar tuner, I recommend this one:
